The Human Art of Networking: The Second Gift Positivity

Positivity: an inward and/or outward aspect of optimism and enthusiasm.
In some business circles words like ‘positivity’ are shrugged off as being too soft and intangible to be of any real value. But ‘positivity’ can have a significant tangible impact on any business professional.
While it might be possible to build a successful business behind a locked door, most business models simply won’t allow for it. Businesses typically survive and thrive by building robust collaborative relationships. These relationships, in turn, are built where both competence and likeability are present.
And in order to be likable you must be positive.
Here are three keys to expressing your positivist as a business networker:
  • Key #1 – Smile for Yourself
    • A smile is more than a shape on a face. Smiles release endorphins in brain which generate feelings of well-being and happiness. This then results in greater self-confidence, passion, energy and the ability to persevere.
    • Smiles are a fuel of personal success.
  • Key #2 – Smile for Others
    • Smiling for others is done for much the same reasons. Except this time it is for your smile’s recipient. When we smile at another it is only natural that they would smile back. Then all the same events occur for them as they did for you in Key #1.
    • And when they experience all the benefits, you get the credit for making them feel good.
  • Key #3 – Smile, Even When it Hurts
    • But sometimes we don’t want to smile. After all, life isn’t always easy. What do we do then?
      • Are you able to put on a smile even when you are not in the mood? If so, congratulations!
      • If not, welcome to the club! For most of us, finding a positive outlook in a negative space is not easy. To do this, rely on your positive past. Find a moment, or collection of them, that remind you of joyful times. Keep those moments present. Reflect on them often. By doing so you will find a smile comes much easier.
In Dale Carnegie’s great book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” he wrote the following:

Your smile is a messenger of your good will. Your smile brightens the lives of all who see it. To someone who has seen a dozen people frown, scowl or turn their faces away, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds.

Positivity is not just a feel-good word. It is a state of mind that leads to greater personal success and stronger professional relationships. Smile! …and succeed.
