33: Robert Killen:  The Human Art of Networking

While there are many varied skills that inform this Human Art, these three keys are cornerstones of the APEX philosophy:

Key #1: Listen Wholly

The skill of listening is the single most important, underappreciated and underutilized attribute of human communication. And merely providing evidence of listening (sitting forward, eyes front, etc.) is not listening itself. Listening well requires ferocious effort to keep the mind quiet and to remain present with the communication being shared, without judgment and without focusing on one’s own needs.

Key #2: Master Your Stories

Stories are not just for kids. Too often we forget that narrative (in the form of stories, metaphor, anecdotes, images, etc.) is fundamental to human understanding.

  • It is only through stories that we connect with others and stick in their minds.
  • It is only through stories that our facts and figures have any meaning.
  • It is only through stories that we can share who we are and how we came to be.

Great networkers always seem to have a story ready to share on any topic. This isn’t a coincidence, nor is it a talent one is born with. It is a skill to master.

Master Your Stories and you become an immediate point of interest. People are hardwired to listen to stories. You should be the one telling them.

Key #3: Serve Others

Seth Godin, networking guru and author of Tribes said it well: “The networking that matters is helping people achieve their goals. Doing it reliably and repeatedly so that, over time, people have an interest in helping you achieve your goals…”

Networking is not about giving with the expectation of return, but giving because it is right to do so, with confidence that your gift will return to you many-fold in the end.

To Serve Others with a generous spirit, is the most certain step toward networking success one can ever take.
